What makes a bloodite tick?

Post by Lizzieborden » Wed Jul 06, 2022 10:29 pm

Curious (yet again...)

What makes a bloodite tick?

Now, I know, I know,
Some of you's will yelp, and perhaps scream at the sky : "Hey Lizzie...you are generalizing ! Bloodites, like good looks, come in all sizes ! Diversity is our strength! you BIGOT!!" and blablabla.
Wokesters can go to the hell. No safe space here, as per the Dreaming God's directives.
I think it IS possible to find at least a few common denominators amongs the seemingly amorphous blob some call the bloodite "community." (I hate that word "community" )

So..which of your traits do you think made you into a bloodite?

I'll go first:

For me, it is
1. my fervent Catholic faith , combined with a fascination with (and great fear of ) evil
2. my fascination with tragic stories in film with heroes who are ambiguous (partly evil, partly good) The Hunger, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, etc...
3. My ambiguity (for example a close asociation of pain and pleasure, love and hate) Blood's Caleb is infinitely sad as well as evil. Everything in Blood stresses this: the tracks, the quips,
4. Being on the margins of normality (my profession , for one).
5. having been exposed to blood as a Toddler, which left an indelible matk on me.
6. A sadisitc penchant (even though in real life I am very submissive) . Setting human cultists on fire is a guilty pleasure that would shock even my priest in Confession)
voila !
How bout you guys?
(any girsl on this forum btw?)

I was pre/teen in the 90's. Mostly drew skulls and Donald Duck variations with guns. Never was interested in school. How could I not like Blood? Same with Carmageddon - I mean - how could you not giggle to granpa flying in volley over your can when you run them over?

Not a perquisite to enjoying Blood, but being into horror did contribute to "love at first sight" when I started playing it in my early childhood. I was into monsters, ghosts, haunted houses, graveyards, spiders, etc. so it felt like a game that was tailor-made for me.

What retained me for decades is harder to explain, besides the outstanding quality of Blood itself. For one, I think having something like "synesthesia" gives me a strong sense of atmosphere, and Blood really delivers in that department.

Amen (and awomen) to that.

Well, I've spoken to and observed quite a few over the years, and the usual template for a Bloodite would be a male, usually slightly withdrawn and with alternative tastes. I don't know if this holds as much these days as it used to, but Blood definitely attracts "scene" people - like metalheads, which I've seen quite a few of.

As for myself, I've got a soft spot for horror, which as Moonstalker Dead Reckoner points out, makes it an easy sell. Despite shooters not actually being my favourite genre, Blood is my favourite game, of course, and I think it's because Blood is so layered in its themes and it really lands perfectly with regards to mixing really good action, exploration and secrets. No game feels like it, but I'll stop myself there before I fill the thread with a booklet.

I don't think there are any active girls on the forum (besides Lizzie), and historically I can only think of three female examples of Bloodites which are lost to time. This certainly puts the prospect of Bloodite reproduction in question and we could have a demographic crisis in future if we don't find fresh victims volunteers.

Something nice to close with is that I've never met an outright unpleasant fan of Blood - though statistically I suppose they're out there, and these forums exist to filter such things. And finally - generally and historically Blood has attracted wonderfully peculiar people, which is good fun, too.

The only Bloodite i Knew before this forum was my uncle (and , yes, he was the ONLY family member I cared about and who tried to help me)
So far, for me, all Bloodites have been way cool and (as you say) peculiar...ergo fun to be with.

. The you would have been the sorta guy I would have tried to hang out with fer shure. I drew too (mostly vampires and gothic stuff ). I only enjoyed language courses

Same here. In blood, everything just dovetails perfectly. And even after over two years of playing it it still jsut draws me in.

I would say generally the game appeals more to 'less conventional/more interesting types' who don't feel uncomfortable playing a game with such violence and gore.

For me it was a chance thing: I found the game on my stepbrother's computer years ago, as well as a puzzle game called Endorfun which is the most hippy-est game I've seen (very peace and love, man) and a floppy disk of pornography - which my stepmum seemed to get annoyed at me for finding. whatever.

How much porn can one really fit on a floppy disk?

By the time Blood rolled around, I was already jaded beyond repair by Nekromantik, it's sequel and a number of other vile, disgusting horror films...so yeah, a bit of pixely gore wasn't exactly a deterrent for me.

Now, while that didn't keep me from approaching it, the one thing that has kept me coming back would have to be the fact that Blood is a perfect game with an exquisitely developed theme and artistry unmatched unto this very day, and much like a good record, you just have to play it.

I'm strangely fascinated with the dark and depraved. I wouldn't say I'm a maniac- far from it, just weird- but a lot of taboo thrills me. Beneath the veneer of the normal societal life we uphold are hells like violence, hatred, gore, destruction and death, and those things carry artistic merit to me. Maybe even beauty, in the same way one would lustfully eye a lot lizard. Nasty, visceral movies are great fun, a lot of my favorite music is aggressive and violent and just about every game I'm into involves dismantling flesh with powerful weapons. It is what it is.

To date, no game has really done it for me like Blood. It has a charm and lasting appeal that I can't really say anything new about. I love it dearly, and it's a pleasure to see there's a forum here for people that feel the same way. I desperately wish this medium didn't fall by the wayside like it has.

Blood definitely attracts an easily characterizable crowd, especially those who are really into it, which isn't a bad thing because that crowd is alright. I'd say horror/edgy media as a whole does that, for the most part, and I'd fit right into some of our established commonalities among this blob.

A warm, bloody welcome to you, Hexenbrenner. By all means, don't let the fact that you would not say anything new give you pause in praising Blood's charms.

This is an altar, is it not? I think my favorite thing about Blood is how vibrant the gameplay is for such a typically dreary visual style, especially compared to its contemporaries. Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem 3D and the like had explosive, violent combat, but Blood was the only Build shooter where you were bounding about like a jackrabbit while explosions dynamically displaced your foes. There are subtleties in Caleb's animations and your movement that just make the game feel second to none. That all speaks to me and cements it as one of the peaks of the genre.

The ambient and death sounds of the cultists are also unparalleled, even twenty-five years later. Call me crazy, but such a detail as their acting really goes a long way in making the game feel timeless. Even as they plug you full of holes and piss you off, they ooze character and intrigue.
