They are certainly good for cheese cutting
I still have the old Opinel, wood handle, that I used on school excursions to the mountains.
It does seem cheap... but also trusty. And, yes, it was used to cut gruyere, tomme, and vacherin (that last one is the best cheese EVER)
But of course we also all had a Victorinox (soldier version) for serious stuff.
French weaponry (let alone knives) not that good. But the Citroen Traction Avant and the DS were impressive as f. !
My father (Requiescat in pace) used to collect European cars (French mainly) , and my uncle went for US cars (chevrolet "Trifives") .
